If we think of “culture” as simply “the way we do things around here” – and then I asked you to describe the “culture” that your managers are creating – what would you say? 

Do your managers even realize that they have the power to create culture?

Most managers think that they are powerless to create culture – when in fact, the opposite is completely true.

They may not have 100% control of the culture they desire, but that’s true for any leader – no matter how senior.

Ask your managers at your next meeting:

  • What kind of culture are you creating (or is being created)?
  • How would you describe it in 3 words? Is this the desired culture that you want?
  • Are there 3 other words that come to mind when describing your ideal culture?

Then ask them, “What needs to happen – that is in your control – that can close the gap between your CURRENT and your IDEAL culture?

The gap closing answers your manager gives is your manager’s own Culture-Change Action Plan. Click here for a template you can use.

So … the next question is one to ask yourself – “Are you ready and able to support your managers in creating the kind of culture they desire?

BOTTOM LINE: Culture can be created by managers at any level in your organization. But if you’re not ready and able to support culture-change efforts – then neither are your managers.
